We’ve all been there – a moment of frustration, anger, or annoyance takes over, and suddenly, words are spoken in a meeting that we wish we could take back. Can you relate? I certainly can!

But here’s the thing: those outbursts are not random. They are rooted in simple psychology. Our brains have a limbic system responsible for emotions and a frontal lobe for problem-solving and rational thinking. The amygdala, a part of the limbic system, triggers instinctive emotional reactions. Unfortunately, in moments of anger, the amygdala often overrides the frontal lobe, leading to those regrettable outbursts.

However, there’s hope!  We can practice strategies to conquer this impulse. So, how can we overcome that initial emotional reaction? Let’s delve into a simple yet effective technique that can banish those moments of embarrassment and regret forever.

The Power of Consequential Thinking

Consequential thinking is the antidote to mindless, reactionary behaviour that can hinder your journey towards becoming an exceptional leader. It involves a three-step process: pause, evaluate, and choose your response.

  1. Pause – Allow your emotions to surface without taking immediate action. How long? Just six seconds! Emotions are like molecules, and that’s how long it takes for them to run their course in your brain and body before they are reabsorbed.
  2. Evaluate – Question why you’re feeling a certain way. What’s the best possible outcome for your actions in this situation? How can you tailor your response to achieve that result?
  3. Choose Your Response – Respond after considering the consequences of your behavior for both yourself and others involved.

How Consequential Thinking Elevates Your Leadership

This technique can really improve your leadership through relationship building.  Here are three main ways how it improves this.

Know Your Values

Consequential thinking forces you to clarify your values. What truly matters to you in life and your career? Identifying your values will motivate you and guide your decision-making. When you pause and reflect, you can align your actions with your values.

Build Better Relationships

Consequential thinking enhances your professional relationships. Your behavior as a leader determines how others perceive you. When faced with a team member’s mistake, pausing and delivering constructive feedback calmly builds trust and positive relationships.

Managing Challenging Emotions

Consequential thinking equips you to handle explosive emotions. Challenging emotions are part of life, especially in leadership roles. Understanding your values and pausing to reflect on what drives you helps you deal with these emotions effectively, preventing potential outbursts.

Consequential thinking is an useful tool for your leadership toolkit. It encourages you to clarify your values, make thoughtful decisions, and act with intention, rather than succumbing to challenging emotions.  Practice this technique at work or at home and let me know how you go!
