Let’s be honest, there comes a time even for the most seasoned leaders, when the once-vibrant flame of influence and energy begins to flicker. Standing at the crossroads of experience and weariness, the question often arises…What to do when you’ve lost your leadership mojo?

In this journey of leadership, where challenges like work-life balance, keeping pace with technology and the daunting task of addressing global issues loom large, it’s natural to feel adrift.  What’s important to realise is this introspective juncture isn’t a signal of weakness but an opportunity for rediscovery.

What’s better than a thought-provoking exploration of leadership rekindling!  This is a journey not marked by quick fixes but by the gradual unfolding of an even deeper sense of personal leadership identity.   Let’s explore how you can rediscover your leadership mojo!

Navigating the Leadership Abyss

It’s not uncommon for uncertainty to cast a shadow over confidence at some point in your career.  And let’s be honest, it can be awful!  We start to question what we can give and the the impact we can make.   Leaders, who especially have had a lot of success and have built the freedom to choose what they want to focus on and are now looking at how they approach their last 10 – 20 years of their career.  The key lies in acknowledging this as a challenge rather than viewing the uncertainty as a barrier.  As we build our experience as leaders over a long time, we forget to embrace the opportunity to be the learner!  So the uncertainty you can feel is a great reminder to embrace being a learner again.

The Essence of Rediscovery

Rediscovering your leadership mojo involves more than a surface-level solution; it’s about a profound understanding of yourself.   This rediscovery revolves around introspection, self-awareness, and being open to new and different networks and challenges. We can peel back the layers, reflecting on often new and evolving values that may have never popped up in our lives before, strengths that we want to harness and utilise, and new motivations coming through.

It’s in this deep, reflective process that we unearth the roots of our personal leadership identity, allowing you to move beyond the superficial challenges and truly understand what leadership means to you.

Leadership as an evolving journey, not a fixed destination. When we let go of the notion that your leadership identity is stagnant, and embrace the idea that it’s a dynamic force shaped by experience, introspection, and the collective wisdom of a supportive community.

Personal Reflection – A Leader’s Journey

Sherl Westlund illustrates the transformative power of rediscovery, when she registered the Greater Good Collective.  Sherl is a highly experienced and well respected executive, who had spent the last 20 years focusing on achieving exceptional outcomes for the organisation she was dedicated to.

Despite the uncertainty of what was next, she faced the doubt, embraced reinvention, and ultimately discovered her leadership mojo through the courage to forge a new pathway for herself.  This story is a testament to the universal struggles that leaders encounter and the resilience that can be found through self-reflection, courage and experimentation.

Strategies for Leadership Reinvention

Reflection and action lie at the heart of leadership reinvention. These strategies, ranging from small, incremental changes to more profound shifts, are designed to empower you to take the reins of your leadership identity.  Remember, the key is not to rush but to embrace the process, celebrating every step toward reclaiming your leadership mojo.

1. Cultivate Self-Awareness

Begin by cultivating a deep sense of self-awareness. Engage in reflective practices, such as journaling or mindfulness, to explore your values, strengths, and areas for growth. Yet, often we can get caught in the same stories or thoughts that we tell ourselves about our own values, strengths and vulnerabilities. Through different journaling techniques and conversations with different people, this can spark new perspectives.

2. Set Explorative Experiments

Give yourself the time and space to set experiments to inspire newfound insights. Discomfort can be a powerful catalyst for growth. These could range from refining communication skills to exploring new avenues for personal and professional growth.  Challenging yourself to step outside your comfort zone regularly can provide new insights and expand your understanding of yourself.

3. Leverage Peer Mentorship

Seek out peer mentors within a supportive community who will stretch and challenge your thinking. Share experiences and learning, insights, and strategies.  The power of shared wisdom and encouragement can be instrumental in reshaping your leadership narrative.  Cultivating opportunities for feedback from peers, mentors, and even work mates, can act as a mirror, offering valuable reflections on your leadership journey, as well as exploring the cracks for new potential futures too.

4. Create a Leadership Philosophy

There is great power in declarations! A personal leadership philosophy encapsulates your values, principles, and vision.  This serves as a guiding document, reminding you of your core beliefs and aspirations. Then you can anchor yourself in the essence of your leadership identity.

5. Prioritise Well-Being

Recognise the symbiotic relationship between well-being and effective leadership.  Prioritise self-care, ensuring a balance between professional and personal life. A leader in tune with their well-being is better equipped to inspire and lead with authenticity.  Embrace opportunities for time out, meditation, movement and sabbaticals.  Often we need to let go of the old to let in the new.

6. Celebrate Progress

Finally, celebrate every milestone, no matter how small.  Acknowledge the progress you make on your leadership reinvention journey.  Reflect on the positive changes you’ve implemented and the growth you’ve experienced. Celebrations serve as affirmations of your commitment and dedication.

It’s the Journey

Leadership rediscovery is not a destination but a continuous journey. Embrace the ongoing process of self-reflection, community support, and values-driven leadership. Your leadership mojo is not lost; it’s evolving!
